At RNOH we have a long and successful history of carrying out joint replacement surgery over many decades and have one of the lowest infection rates in the country. A successful outcome starts with good preparation. You will also find more information in our patient guide on our website and patient information booklets. Thank you for taking the time to watch this important educational video. If you have any questions, concerns or feedback please email us at
Throughout this video members of your healthcare team will explain important aspects of your joint replacement surgery journey. This will help you understand what to expect at various points along the pathway and what you can do to help us to help you ensure you are prepared for surgery and have a smooth discharge home within a few days and a successful recovery.
Having been placed on our waiting list for an operation we will assess your health and check if you are fit for surgery. This will take place in our Pre-assessment Clinic which you will be asked to attend before you are given a date for your surgery.
We will inform you about MRSA screening, keeping warm before surgery and the importance of cleaning your hands regularly
You will have an opportunity to see the pharmacist in pre-operative assessment clinic and discuss your medicines with them. You will be informed of any medicines you may need to stop taking prior to your surgery such as blood thinners, hormone replacement therapy or some blood pressure medications.
Occupational therapists work with patients to design a programme of treatment based on the individual's unique lifestyle and preferences, sometimes modifying the environment surrounding the person.
